Plumbing Installation in Melrose, MA

Plumbing installation is the work of running supply lines, drains and vents to a new or rebuilt space, and then connecting the fixtures that use them. We handle bathroom and kitchen plumbing, showers piped with PEX, laundry hookups and fixture swaps for homeowners and for general contractors.

Tell us what is being built or changed, and we explain what rough-in comes first, what the inspector will look at and where the permit fits. You get a plain plan before pipe goes in, and a clear list of what each stage costs in time.

Rough-in comes before finishes

Every installation has two stages. Rough-in puts pipes inside the walls and floor before drywall and tile. Trim-out sets the fixtures after the surfaces are done.

Getting the order wrong is expensive. Move a shower valve after tile goes up and you are cutting through finished work. We walk the space with you, mark fixture locations, then hand the framers and tile setters a clean layout.

Working beside your contractor is routine for us. We tell them when we need blocking in the studs for the shower valve or a vent route through a joist bay.

What we install

Bathroom plumbing

New toilets, vanities, tubs and showers, with drain slopes set so water moves and vents sized so traps keep their seal. S-traps from older work are replaced with proper P-traps and vents.

Kitchen plumbing

Sinks, dishwasher hookups, disposals, pot fillers and refrigerator ice lines. Supply valves go in where you can reach them, and drain runs are kept short.

Shower plumbing

Valve bodies set to tile depth, a diverter or thermostatic valve, and a drain that matches the pan. Low pressure in a new bathroom is often a sizing or valve problem we catch early.

Laundry and utility

Washer boxes, standpipes, utility sinks and the drain they all need. Sometimes the original rough plumbing is simply missing, and we run it.

Fixture swaps

Replacing a toilet, sink, tub faucet or shower trim with the same connections is quick. A new location needs piping, so we scope it first.

PEX or copper for the shower and supply lines

PEX tubing

  • Flexible, so it snakes through walls with fewer joints.
  • Handles a freeze better than rigid pipe, though it can still split.
  • Joined with crimp or expansion fittings.
  • Not for outdoor sun exposure or hot-water recirculation near heat sources.

Copper pipe

  • Rigid, long-lived and familiar to inspectors.
  • Soldered joints need open flame near framing.
  • Takes more time to run through finished spaces.
  • Costs more in material and can be noisy if loosely strapped.

PEX comes in A, B and C types with different fittings, and the right choice depends on the job. For most new shower and bath runs it is the practical pick, and 1/2 inch branch lines on 3/4 inch mains are standard sizing.

What a plumbing permit means in Melrose

A permit is the city's record that plumbing work was planned, inspected and passed. In Melrose, Inspectional Services issues plumbing and gas permits, and you apply online through the city's permit portal. Sub-trade permits are granted only to licensed professionals, so ask your licensed plumber to pull it.

Inspections for plumbing and gas happen Monday to Thursday, with no Friday visits. Staff review of an application can take 2 to 3 weeks depending on volume, so build that into your remodel schedule. The printed permit must be posted at the job site.

Ask your plumber who is pulling the permit before you sign, and ask to see it posted. Work started without one is charged triple the fee.

How an installation job runs

  1. 1

    Walk and plan

We review plans or the open space, mark fixtures and flag problems like a missing vent or an undersized drain.

  2. 2

    Permit and rough-in

The permit is applied for, then pipes go in. Pressure testing happens before anything is closed up.

  3. 3

    Inspection

If the city requires an inspection for your job, it happens before the walls close. We fix anything flagged before the walls are closed up.

  4. 4

    Trim and test

Fixtures are set after finishes, connected and run. Valves, traps and drains are checked for leaks.

What changes the price of an installation

Number and type of fixturesA single vanity swap is very different from a full bathroom with a custom shower.
Distance to existing linesA new fixture near current pipes costs less than one that needs a long run.
Wall, floor and accessOpen framing is cheaper to pipe than finished walls, slabs or crawlspaces.
Material choicePEX and copper differ in materials and labor, and fixture quality varies widely.
Permit and inspectionThe city fees above are part of the budget, and rough-in must wait on inspections.
Insurance note. Insurance generally does not pay for new installations or upgrades. It may cover water damage when a failed fixture connection floods a room, so keep photos and receipts. Want your real number? Call (339) 216-9771 and we quote the job before work starts.

Questions we hear

Often a like-for-like fixture swap is minor, but rules differ by project. Melrose lists a residential minimum fee of $30, so ask Inspectional Services or your plumber about your exact job before starting.

Plumbing and gas permits are granted only to licensed professionals. Your licensed plumber applies online and posts the permit at the job site.

PEX bends around corners, which cuts the number of joints hidden in the wall. Fewer joints means fewer places for a leak to start. It is joined with crimp or expansion fittings.

Yes. We schedule rough-in before drywall and trim-out after tile, and we tell your contractor what blocking, framing changes or vent routes we need.

It can. City inspections for plumbing run Monday to Thursday, and you schedule by phone on the day you want. Ask Inspectional Services how far ahead to schedule an inspection.

We replace S-traps with P-traps and proper venting, and test pressure at the fixture. Low pressure in new bathrooms usually traces to undersized lines or a partly closed valve.

Yes. We set the supply box, standpipe and drain, and we can also coordinate with a gas fitter for a gas dryer.
